Autum Klein, M.D., Ph.D.
April 23, 2013
Dear friends and Colleagues
By now, many of you may have heard of the awful news we received yesterday about our dear friend and colleague, Dr. Autumn Klein. It is with supreme sadness that I convey the news that she passed away unexpectedly this past Saturday, April 20. She apparently suffered a cardiac arrest on Wednesday evening.
Autumn was a complete dynamo from the time she first arrived to Harvard having completed her undergraduate degree at Amherst College, and her M.D., Ph.D. at Boston University. Autumn had boundless energy, loved life, academics, but most of all her family, especially her young daughter Cianna (CiCi) whom she bragged could read EEGs before many of our fellows could. In her all too short life, she had already distinguished herself as a leader in women¹s neurology and the neurology of pregnancy.
She left the Brigham approximately two years ago for an incredible opportunity at the University of Pittsburgh to lead their program in Women’s Neurology at their very prestigious and large women’s hospital.
Her patients here at the Brigham still ask about her, and I know they will be in as much shock as we are about this very unfortunate news. She will always have a place in our hearts, and be forever remembered. I am hoping that some of her colleagues will help put together a scrapbook for Cici.
Autumn is survived by her daughter Cianna Ferrante of Pittsburgh, stepdaughter Kimberly Ferrante of San Diego, California, stepson Michael Ferrante of Boston, Massachusetts, and her mother and father, Lois and William Klein, of Towson, Maryland.
Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the University of Pittsburgh, indicating in the memo line "Autumn Klein Fellowship in Epilepsy" and sent to the Medical & Health Sciences Foundation, Attn: Amy Lombard, 3600 Forbes Ave., Ste. 8084, Pittsburgh, PA 15313.
