Getting the 2010 J. Kiffin Penry Excellence in Epilepsy Care Award has been one of the most significant events of my career, both as a physician and as an epileptologist, not only because of the great honor of receiving an award named after one of the giants in the field of epilepsy, but also because it was given to me by the professional society that represent neurologists and other health care provided that take care of patients with epilepsy. The honor associated with getting this award has served as a constant motivation to live-up to the highest standards of care for each one of my patients, with the aim to achieve complete seizure remission and ensure that any co morbid medical and/or psychiatric conditions do not go undetected. In short, this award is a daily reminder that it in treating people with epilepsy, it is not enough to focus on their seizures... we have to ensure that we have tried to improve their quality of life.
