2012 CURE Innovator Award

Sponsor: CURE Source: CURE Application Deadline: June 16, 2006 Eligibility: This award is available to both established and early career investigators*. International applicants are welcome. Researchers who serve on CURE’s Scientific Advisory Board are ineligible to apply for or sponsor a grant for the duration of their term. All materials must be submitted in English.* Generally, early career investigators are university faculty at the assistant professor level (or hold an equivalent position in a non-university research organization). Established investigators are university faculty at the associate professor level or above. In exceptional cases, scientists at the postdoctoral level may be eligible for this award. Application Information: The CURE Innovator Award supports the exploration of a highly innovative new concept or untested theory that addresses an important problem relevant to epilepsy. The Innovator Award is not intended to support a logical progression of an already established research project but, instead, allows Principal Investigators (PIs) the opportunity to pursue innovative research studies. This award mechanism supports high-risk studies that have the potential to reveal entirely new avenues for investigation. Proposals must describe how the new idea will enhance existing knowledge of epilepsy or create an entirely new avenue for investigation. Research completed through an Innovator Award strives to provide sufficient preliminary data to enable the PI to prepare a proposal for future research.Preliminary data is not necessary to receive this grant.Areas of Interest: CURE seeks novel research projects that will address the goals of “no seizures/no side effects.”This program awards seed grants to researchers submitting innovative proposals that will provide new directions for epilepsy therapy, prevention and, ultimately, a cure. We specifically encourage studies that may not be currently fundable by other agencies, such as the NIH, because of their preliminary or unconventional nature.
Sponsor: CURE Source: CURE Application Deadline: June 16, 2006 Eligibility: Eligibility: This program awards a joint seed grant in support of collaborative, multidisciplinary research undertaken by at least two investigators (including early career investigators*)– one investigator specifically specializing in epilepsy and one investigator outside the epilepsy field who is looking to extend his or her work into epilepsy research. Together, the investigators’ joint efforts should be aimed at advancing CURE’s goal of “no seizures/no side effects.” Preference will be given to research addressing the more severe and refractory syndromes of epilepsy. International applicants are welcome. Researchers who serve on CURE’s Scientific Advisory Board are ineligible to apply for or sponsor a grant for the duration of their term. Application Information: CURE promotes collaborative, multidisciplinary research that advances the search for a cure, and addresses the goal of “no seizures, no side effects.” Successful applicants for the Multidisciplinary Award should propose research in at least one of the following priority areas: (1) the basic mechanisms of epileptogenesis; (2) the multifaceted causes of epilepsy; (3) the pediatric epilepsy syndromes; (4) new animal models of epilepsy. We specifically encourage studies that may not be currently fundable by other agencies, such as the NIH, because of their preliminary or unconventional nature. Applicants will be expected to pursue novel, multidisciplinary projects requiring the collaborative efforts of both investigators. The LOI (and subsequent application) should provide specific aims for the proposed work and background for the collaborative research effort. We encourage both new and continuing collaborative relationships between investigators. Invited applicants will be required to describe how each investigator will contribute to the proposed work through details of research design and methods, including where and how the specific projects will be accomplished. Additionally, the application will demonstrate an equitable distribution of budget costs. Successful applications are anticipated to pursue work that could not ordinarily be pursued by either of the investigators without collaborative effort.
2012 CURE Sudden Unexplained Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP) Award

Sponsor: CURE Source: CURE Application Deadline: Eligibility: This award is available to both established and early career investigators*. Application Information: Every year, approximately 50,000 deaths occur in the United States from seizure-related causes including Sudden Unexplained Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP). However, there remains a huge lack of public awareness of SUDEP, and an urgent need for more research to determine underlying mechanisms and identify the causes of SUDEP. Recognizing these inadequacies and the devastating impact SUDEP has on families who have lost a loved one, CURE has established a targeted research program to advance the study of SUDEP.CURE seeks novel research projects that will address the goal of the prevention of SUDEP. This program awards seed grants to researchers submitting innovative proposals that will provide new directions for SUDEP research. We specifically encourage studies that may not be currently fundable by other agencies, such as the NIH, because of their preliminary or unconventional nature. CURE encourages collaborative projects; however, non-collaborative projects will be given equal consideration. Invited applicants who propose a collaborative project should describe how each investigator will contribute to the proposed work through details of research design and methods, including where and how the specific project will be accomplished. Labor and budget do not have to be equally distributed between investigators who choose to work collaboratively.
PA-10-057 (K02) Independent Scientist Award

Sponsor: NINDS Source: NINDS Application Deadline: Eligibility: Candidates for this award must have a doctoral degree.Level of Effort: Candidates must be able to commit a minimum of 9 person-months (75% of full-time professional effort) conducting research career development activities associated with this award. The remaining 3 months (25% effort) can be divided among other research, clinical, and teaching activities only if these activities are consistent with the goals of the K02 award, i.e., the candidate’s development into an independent investigator. For information regarding NIH policy on determining full-time professional effort for career awards, see NOT-OD-04-056. At the time of award, the candidate must have a “full-time” appointment at the academic institution that is the applicant institution. Candidates who have VA appointments may not consider part of the VA effort toward satisfying the “full time” requirement at the applicant institution. Candidates with VA appointments should contact the staff person in the relevant Institute or Center prior to preparing an application to discuss their eligibility. Application Information: The intent of the Independent Scientist Award (K02) is to support health professionals who are committed to a career in neuroscience research and who have recently achieved independent scientist status. This program normally follows a K08 or K23 award and supports the continued career development of independent clinician-scientists so that they can be more successful in obtaining an R01 or equivalent grant. The award provides salary and research costs for the first three years, and continued salary support for years four and five, with the last two years of support contingent on successful competition for an R01 or equivalent award. In contrast to requirements of other institutes, applicants are not eligible for this award if they have a major, independent, peer-reviewed research grant (R01, subproject on a P01, or equivalent) prior to receiving the K02 award. Awardees are encouraged to apply for R01 support at any time after they’ve received the K02 award. The K02 is intended for physician-scientists who are missing one or more components that would make them competitive for an R01, so applicants should not submit an R01 application simultaneously with a K02 application. The candidates must hold a clinical doctoral degree, have completed postgraduate clinical training prior to application, and hold a primary appointment in a clinical department. The candidate must also devote a minimum of 75% effort to the proposed award activities. Special Note: To accommodate neurosurgeons, who need significant clinical activity to maintain their surgical skills, NINDS will accept 50% time commitment to the award.Salary and Research Costs: Salary and Research Costs: In years 1 - 3 of the K02 award, NINDS will provide up to $95,000 of the awardee's salary per year, plus the applicable fringe benefit rate, plus up to $50,000 per year toward research costs. Once an applicant receives an R01 or equivalent award, the applicant may obtain up to 80% of their institutional base salary from the K02, commensurate with their effort on the K02. Once an R01 or equivalent is obtained, research costs will no longer be provided through the K02 award.Institutional Support: Please pay careful attention to specific issues that must be addressed in a statement of institutional support for the K02. http://www.ninds.nih.gov/funding/institutional_support_k02_awards.htm Other: Brandy E Fureman, PhDProgram Director, Extramural Research ProgramNIH/NINDSNeuroscience Center, Room 21386001 Executive Blvd MSC 9523Bethesda, MD 20892-9523furemanb@ninds.nih.gov301-496-1917

PA-10-063 (K99/R00) NIH Pathway to Independence Award

Sponsor: NINDS Source: NINDS Application Deadline: Eligibility: Eligible candidates will have no more than 5 years of postdoctoral research at the time of application (initial or amended). In addition, eligible applicants will currently be in a mentored postdoctoral position, regardless of title. See announcement eligibility section for more details. Application Information: The Pathway to Independence Award is uniquely designed to facilitate the transition of outstanding postdoctoral candidates from mentored to independent research positions. The award contains two components, a mentored (K99) phase that can last up to 2 years and an independent (R00) phase, which will have a duration of 3 years. The objective of the program is to facilitate research independence earlier in an investigator's career. Investigators complete supervised research, and apply for an independent research faculty position, during the mentored phase of the award. Activation of the independent award phase is administrative, and is contingent upon the investigator securing an independent research position. Eligible candidates will have no more than 5 years of postdoctoral research at the time of application (initial or amended). In addition, eligible applicants will currently be in a mentored postdoctoral position, regardless of title. Review the NIH definition of a postdoctoral scholar. Award recipients are expected to obtain R01 support during the independent phase of the award.Special Note: To accommodate neurosurgeons, who need significant clinical activity to maintain their surgical skills, NINDS will accept 50% time commitment to the award.Salary and Research Costs: For mentored candidates in an extramural institution, NINDS will provide up to $50,000 per year for salary support (up to $85,000 per year for applicants with an M.D. degree), plus fringe, and up to $20,000 for research support costs. Budget details for mentored candidates in the NIH intramural program will be negotiated with the sponsoring laboratory and will be consistent with offers to scientists in comparable positions. Applicants must complete budget fields for both phases of the award in order to successfully submit an application. It is expected that the budget for the independent (R00) phase will be unknown at the time of submission. Applicants can simply enter $249,000 in total costs.http://www.ninds.nih.gov/funding/postdoc.htm#k99 Other: Stephen Korn.
PA-10-067 (R01) Research Project Grant

Sponsor: NINDS Source: NINDS Application Deadline: Eligibility: Any individual(s) with the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to carry out the proposed research as the PD/PI is invited to work with his/her organization to develop an application for support. Individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups as well as individuals with disabilities are always encouraged to apply for NIH support. More than one PD/PI (i.e., multiple PDs/PIs), may be designated on the application for projects that require a “team science” approach and therefore clearly do not fit the single-PD/PI model. Additional information on the implementation plans and policies and procedures to formally allow more than one PD/PI on individual research projects is available at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/multi_pi. Application Information: The Research Project Grant (R01) is an award to support a discrete, specified, circumscribed project to be performed by named Project Directors/Principal Investigators (PDs/PIs) in areas representing the investigators’ specific interests and competencies, based on the mission of the NIH. The R01 is the original and historically the oldest grant mechanism used by the NIH to support health-related research and development. The NIH awards R01 grants to institutions/organizations of all types. This mechanism allows the PDs/PIs to define the scientific focus or objective of the research based on particular areas of interest and competence. Although the PDs/PIs write the grant application and are responsible for conducting and supervising the research, the actual applicant is the research institution/organization.Research grant applications are assigned to an NIH IC based on receipt and referral guidelines and many applications are assigned to multiple ICs with related research interests. Each IC maintains a Web site with funding opportunities and areas of interest. Contact with an IC representative may help focus the research plan based on an understanding of the mission of the IC. For specific information about the mission of each NIH IC, see http://www.nih.gov/icd, which provides a brief summary of the research interests in each IC and access to individual IC home pages.Check out other NINDS funding opportunities:http://www.ninds.nih.gov/funding/funding_announcements/funding_opps.htmCheck out other funding grant mechanisms: http://www.ninds.nih.gov/funding/grant_mechanisms.htmNINDS Epilepsy Research Web:http://www.ninds.nih.gov/funding/research/epilepsyweb/index.htm Other: Brandy E Fureman, PhDProgram Director, Extramural Research Program,NIH/NINDS,Neuroscience Center, Room 2138,6001 Executive Blvd, MSC 9523,Bethesda, MD 20892-9523,furemanb@ninds.nih.gov,301-496-1917

All PDs/PIs must be registered in the NIH electronic Research Administration (eRA) Commons prior to the submission of the application (see http://era.nih.gov/ElectronicReceipt/preparing.htm for instructions). The decision of whether to apply for a grant with a single PD/PI or multiple PDs/PIs is the responsibility of the investigators and applicant organizations and should be determined by the scientific goals of the project. Applications for grants with multiple PDs/PIs will require additional information, as outlined in the instructions below. When considering the multiple PD/PI option, please be aware that the structure and governance of the PD/PI leadership team as well as the knowledge, skills and experience of the individual PDs/PIs will be factored into the assessment of the overall scientific merit of the application. Multiple PDs/PIs on a project share the authority and responsibility for leading and directing the project, intellectually and logistically. Each PD/PI is responsible and accountable to the grantee organization, or, as appropriate, to a collaborating organization, for the proper conduct of the project or program, including the submission of required reports. For further information on multiple PDs/PIs, please see http://grants.nih.gov/grants/multi_pi. Application Information: The evolution and vitality of the biomedical sciences require a constant infusion of new ideas, techniques, and points of view. These may differ substantially from current thinking or practice and may not yet be supported by substantial preliminary data. By using the R21 mechanism, the NIH seeks to foster the introduction of novel scientific ideas, model systems, tools, agents, targets, and technologies that have the potential to substantially advance biomedical research. The R21 mechanism is intended to encourage new exploratory and developmental research projects. For example, such projects could assess the feasibility of a novel area of investigation or a new experimental system that has the potential to enhance health-related research. Another example could include the unique and innovative use of an existing methodology to explore a new scientific area. These studies may involve considerable risk but may lead to a breakthrough in a particular area, or to the development of novel techniques, agents, methodologies, models, or applications that could have a major impact on a field of biomedical, behavioral, or clinical research.Applications for R21 awards should describe projects distinct from those supported through the traditional R01 mechanism. For example, long-term projects, or projects designed to increase knowledge in a well-established area, will not be considered for R21 awards. Applications submitted under this mechanism should be exploratory and novel. These studies should break new ground or extend previous discoveries toward new directions or applications. This funding opportunity will use the R21 award mechanism. For NINDS specific R21 requirements go to this website: http://www.ninds.nih.gov/funding/r21guidelines.htmCheck out other opportunities at NINDS Grant Mechanisms: http://www.ninds.nih.gov/funding/grant_mechanisms.htmNINDS Epilepsy Research Web:http://www.ninds.nih.gov/funding/research/epilepsyweb/index.htm Other: Brandy E Fureman, PhDProgram Director, Extramural Research ProgramNIH/NINDSNeuroscience Center, Room 21386001 Executive Blvd MSC 9523Bethesda, MD 20892-9523furemanb@ninds.nih.gov301-496-1917

PA-10-070 (R15) Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA)

Sponsor: NINDS Source: NINDS Application Deadline: Eligibility: Any individual(s) with the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to carry out the proposed research as the PD/PI is invited to work with his/her organization to develop an application for support. Individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups as well as individuals with disabilities are always encouraged to apply for NIH support. Scientists working in AREA-eligible minority or women's educational institutions are also encouraged to participate in this program. However, applicants:May not be the Project Director/Principal Investigator (PD/PI) of any active NIH research grant, including another AREA grant, at the time of award of an AREA grant (although he or she may be one of the project personnel for an active NIH grant held by another PD/PI). May not be awarded more than one AREA grant at a time (although he or she may hold successive new or competing renewal AREA grants). May not submit an application to NIH for another research grant for essentially the same project proposed in a pending AREA application (in accordance with the general NIH prohibition against the submission in the same review cycle of more than one application for the same work). The applicant organization must offer baccalaureate or advanced degrees in the sciences related to biomedical and behavioral and meet the requirement of receiving research grants and/or cooperative agreements from the NIH totaling not more than $6 million per year (in both direct and F&A/indirect costs) in each of four (4) or more of the last seven (7) years. The applicant organization must be a “Health professional school/college” or “other academic component” at a university/college.See announcement link for more details. Application Information: The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is continuing to make a special effort to stimulate research in educational institutions that provide baccalaureate or advanced degrees for a significant number of the Nation's research scientists, but that have not been major recipients of NIH support. Since Fiscal Year (FY) 1985, Congressional appropriations for the NIH have included funds for this initiative, which NIH has implemented through the Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA) program. Based on the expectation that funds will continue to be available each year, the NIH invites applications for AREA grants (R15) through a standing, ongoing Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA). AREA funds are intended to support new ("type 1") and renewal ("type 2") biomedical, behavioral or clinical research projects proposed by faculty members of eligible colleges, universities, schools, and components of domestic institutions. The AREA program will enable qualified scientists to receive support for small-scale research projects. These grants are intended to create a research opportunity for scientists and institutions otherwise unlikely to participate extensively in NIH programs to support the Nation's biomedical and behavioral research effort. It is anticipated that investigators supported under the AREA program will benefit from the opportunity to conduct independent research; that the grantee institution will benefit from a research environment strengthened through AREA grants and furthered by participation in the diverse extramural programs of the NIH; and that available students will benefit from exposure to and participation in scientific research in the biomedical, behavioral and clinical sciences. The AREA program is a research grant program and not a training or fellowship program. Active involvement of undergraduate and graduate students in the proposed research is encouraged, and reviewers will consider whether the proposed project will expose undergraduate (preferably, if available) and graduate students to meritorious research. However, the application should not focus on training objectives and training plans should not be provided. This funding opportunity will use the R15 award mechanism.Check out other opportunities at NINDS Grant Mechanisms: http://www.ninds.nih.gov/funding/grant_mechanisms.htmNINDS Epilepsy Research Web:http://www.ninds.nih.gov/funding/research/epilepsyweb/index.htm Other: Randall Stewart, PhDNINDSRoom 21356001 Executive BlvdBethesda, MD 20892301-496-1917stewartr@ninds.nih.gov

PA-10-109 (F31) Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Awards for Individual Predoctoral Fellowships to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research

Sponsor: NINDS Source: NINDS Application Deadline: null Eligibility: Individuals from racial and ethnic groups that have been shown by the National Science Foundation to be underrepresented in health-related sciences on a national basis (see http://www.nsf.gov/statistics/showpub.cfm?TopID=2&SubID=27). In addition, it is recognized that under-representation can vary from setting to setting and individuals from racial or ethnic groups that can be convincingly demonstrated to be underrepresented by the grantee institution are eligible for support under this program. B. Individuals with disabilities, who are defined as those with a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities. C. Individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, who are defined as: 1. Individuals who come from a family with an annual income below established low-income thresholds. These thresholds are based on family size; published by the U.S. Bureau of the Census; adjusted annually for changes in the Consumer Price Index; and adjusted by the Secretary for use in all health professions programs. The Secretary periodically publishes these income levels at http://aspe.hhs.gov/poverty/index.shtml. For individuals from low income backgrounds, the institution must be able to demonstrate that such candidates have qualified for Federal disadvantaged assistance or they have received any of the following student loans: Health Professions Student Loans (HPSL), Loans for Disadvantaged Student Program, or they have received scholarships from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services under the Scholarship for Individuals with Exceptional Financial Need.2. Individuals who come from a social, cultural, or educational environment such as that found in certain rural or inner-city environments that have demonstrably and recently directly inhibited the individual from obtaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to develop and participate in a research career. Eligibility related to a disadvantaged background (C1 and C2) is most applicable to high school and perhaps to undergraduate candidates, but would be more difficult to justify for individuals beyond that level of academic achievement. Under extraordinary circumstances the PHS may, at its discretion, consider an individual beyond the undergraduate level to be from a disadvantaged background. Such decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis, based on appropriate documentation. Application Information: NINDS provides National Research Service Award (NRSA) training fellowships to outstanding predoctoral candidates from groups that have been shown to be underrepresented, including underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, individuals with disabilities, and individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. The intent of this program is to increase the number of scientists from underrepresented populations in biomedical research. Award recipients will receive up to five years of research training leading to a PhD. or equivalent research degree, a combined MD-PhD. degree, or another formally combined professional and research doctoral degree in biomedical, behavioral, health services, or clinical sciences. Support is NOT available for individuals enrolled in medical or other professional schools UNLESS they are enrolled in a combined professional doctorate/PhD degree program in biomedical or behavioral research.
