How long will I need to take medications?

If someone develops epilepsy after traumatic brain injury, it is not clear how long they would need to be on medicine. If the seizures become controlled easily on low doses of a single medicine, and the recovery from the injury is very good otherwise, it is possible that after 3 to 5 years, the medicine can be slowly discontinued. Even here, there is a moderate likelihood of the seizures coming back. If the seizures are hard to control and the effects of the injury persist, stopping medicine after a few years is not a good idea, since the seizures are more likely to come back, and may be harder to control.
