How will the doctor know if I am on the right dose of medication?

The right dose of medication is that which keeps the seizures away without causing side effects. For many medications, doctors can determine the level of medicine in your blood and use that measurement to try to adjust medication doses. It must be emphasized, however, that blood levels do not always correlate with effectiveness or side effects, so should be considered guidelines and not absolute indicators.

Since many medications can cause changes in blood counts, or changes in liver function, doctors will also take blood to measure these factors every once in a while. There is no absolutely correct way to do this, but most doctors will want to check these things twice a year or more.
