Univ. of Utah Professor Karen S. Wilcox, Ph.D., Elected to American Epilepsy Society Board

SAN DIEGO, December 3, 2012 – Karen S. Wilcox, Ph.D., Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Utah, over the weekend was elected a board director of the American Epilepsy Society (AES), during the Society’s 66th annual meeting and scientific conference at the San Diego Conference Center.   AES is the 3,000- member society of epileptologists and healthcare professionals dedicated to the prevention, treatment, and cure of is epilepsy. 

Dr. Wilcox has a special interest in epilepsy and serves as a co-investigator of the Anticonvulsant Drug Development Program at the University of Utah.  She is chair of the AES Scientific Program Committee for the organization’s annual meeting ending here tomorrow.

In areas of research, Dr. Wilcox focuses on basic mechanisms of pharmacoresistant epilepsy, the role of inflammation in epilepsy development and seizure generation, and the mechanisms of action of anti-seizure drugs. 

Dr. Wilcox has served on the scientific advisory board for Citizen’s United for Research in Epilepsy (CURE).  She is a steward for the NINDS epilepsy research search benchmarks, a former member of the Acute Neural Injury & Epilepsy study section at NIH, and an ad hoc grants application reviewer for NINDS and non-governmental foundations.  She is a frequent reviewer of journal article submissions in pharmacology, neuroscience, and epilepsy.
