Univ. of Colorado Professor Amy R. Brooks-Kayal, M.D.
Named Vice President of American Epilepsy Society
SAN DIEGO, December 3, 2012 – Amy R. Brooks-Kayal, M.D., professor of pediatrics, neurology and pharmaceutical sciences at the University of Colorado, over the weekend was elected second vice- president of the American Epilepsy Society (AES), during the Society’s 66th annual meeting and scientific conference at the San Diego Convention Center. AES is the 3,000-member society of physicians and allied healthcare professionals dedicated to the prevention, treatment, and cure of epilepsy. Dr. Brooks-Kayal’s election to the AES board leadership position is effective immediately.
Dr. Brooks-Kayal is a practicing epileptologist who holds the position of Ponzio Family Chair and Chief of Pediatric Neurology at Colorado Children’s Hospital. She is also engaged in research on the molecular mechanisms underlying the development of epilepsy.
As an active volunteer, Dr. Brooks-Kayal has served as chair of the AES Scientific Program Committee, and as a member of the Nominating Committee, and Governance Committee. She currently is a member of the AES Awards Committee and chair of the Merritt-Putnam Committee.
Dr. Brooks-Kayal serves on the executive committee of the American Neurological Association, as a councilor for the Professors of Neurology, and as task force memberships for the Child Neurology Society and the Society for Neuroscience. She organized and chaired a session on epilepsy co-morbidities for the NIH-sponsored conference on curing epilepsy, and currently serves as co-chair and steward for the NINDS epilepsy benchmark on epilepsy co-morbidities, as well as chair of the working group on co-morbidities for a forthcoming ILAE/AES workshop on preclinical epilepsy therapy discovery.
The newly elected second vice president was trained in medicine and science at Johns Hopkins University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Philadelphia Children’s Hospital. She is on the scientific advisory boards for Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy (CURE) and for the National EpiFellows Foundation. Dr. Brooks-Kayal is a past associate editor of the journal Epilepsia, and currently reviews for several other scientific journals.
