RATIONALE: Oxcarbazepine (OXC) has been in use in Denmark for 17 years. As OXC is new in many countries we want to inform about our experience. METHODS: Registration of sold antiepileptic drugs calculated in defined daily doses for Denmark is compared with the use in the Epilepsy Clinic at Aarhus University Hospital. RESULTS: Both in Denmark in general and in our Epilepsy Clinic OXC is drug no.2. Drug no.1 for the country in general is carbamazepine, for our Clinic the most used drug is Lamotrigine. CONCLUSIONS: Because of the pharmacokinetic advantages and the efficacy in the treatment of simple and complex partial seizures and primary generalized convulsions OXC can be considered to be a better drug than carbamazepine.
