RATIONALE:_In this paper, we analyzed the prognosis of chronic epilepsy (> 5 years) in the outpatients (p.) (2254 p.) of the Epilepsy Center from 1984 to 1996. METHODS:_A nested type of study was carried out according to the frequency of crises, "cases" (high) the p. with at least than 1 seizure per semester, versus "controls" (low) the p. with less 1 seizure per semester. RESULTS:_The 80.7 % of p. presented high frequency of crises. The 56.8% p. presented Idiophatic/ Cryptogenetic Partial Syndrome, 13.1% p. Sintomatic Partial Syndrome, 26.61% p. Generalised Syndrome, 2.5% p. Generalised/Partial Syndrome and 0.99% p. no classified. The 75,4 % of p. had the first seizure before 20 years old; the highest were between 10 and 15 years old. We found unemployed in both sexes twice the percent than the general population. The risk factors for patients with
