Prognosis of Epilepsy and Tomographic Findings in Children with Seizures and Small Enhancing Computerized Tomographic (CT) Lesions Treated with Antihelmintic Drugs.

RATIONALE: To evaluate the efficacy of albendazole and praziquantel in cases of small enhancing lesions at CT scan. METHODS: In the retrospective study it was analyzed 36 subject between 1,6 and 22 years old with cysticercus granulomas showed at CT scan from Neurology Pediatric Service of Parana Federal University - Clinical Hospital Eight children received and 30 did not receive antihelmintic therapy. CT scan was repeted between 1 and 54 months after the initial diagnosis. All children were followed up for at least 24 months and all were treated with antiepileptic drugs for 1 or 2 years. RESULTS: On the evolution 87% treated with antihelmintic showed calcification and 1 was normal on CT scan. Of the children that were not treated with antihelmintic 89% showed calcification and 2 was normal and 1 did not have CT scan on follow up. Up to now all the children of both group are free of seizures for 12 to 66 months. CONCLUSIONS: The prognosis in good for cysticercus granuloma and seizures control independent of any antihelmintic treatment.
