Rationale: The focus was on the utility of using ambulatory EEG to diagnose epileptic seizures versus non-epileptic events. Methods: In this study, we examined the diagnostic outcomes of 26 patients who underwent ambulatory EEG at a comprehensive epilepsy center between September 2012 and June 2013. Results: Of the 26 studies reviewed, 12 of 26 (46%) were classified as non-epileptic in origin. The ambulatory EEG was considered to be non-diagnostic in 11 of 26 cases (42%). Three of the 11 studies that were felt to be non-diagnostic were due to the inability of ambulatory EEG to distinguish between simple partial seizures or auras with non-epileptic events. Conclusions: Ambulatory EEG can be a useful alternative to inpatient video EEG monitoring in the diagnosis of non-epileptic events.
